Cloud Empress Moves to Hardcover
After careful consideration, discussion on the Cloud Empress Discord, and communication with potential manufacturers, Cloud Empress returns to Kickstarter in hardcover!
The books Land of the Living and Land of the Dead will be printed sewn hardcover, but two of the previous books will also be upgraded. Both the Cloud Empress Rulebook and Land of Cicadas will get hardcover reprints with some added adventures from the previous year one bundle.
I’ve said for the last year that a hardcover release wasn’t in our future, so I wanted to talk through why I’m making the change.
Why is Cloud Empress moving to hardcover?
Fan requested
More space in all Cloud Empress books to combine previous adventures and add additional content
Less limited manufacturer options (many printers do not print 60-page staple-bound zines)
Moving to international manufacturing means hardcover production is now within our project budget
Hardcover books are much easier to stock with retailers
In appreciation of your support, backers of the previous Cloud Empress Kickstarter get a $5 discount on pledges that include the Cloud Empress Rulebook and Land of Cicadas setting book.

Lost Bay Suburban Gothic Horror Lives!
Speaking of crowdfunding, one of my favorite ttrpgs launched on Kickstarter this week. Lost Bay: Suburban Gothic Horror reimagines the 90s with a heavy coat of weird, Stephen King, and skateboards. The books feature stunning art by Evangeline Gallagher plus slick layout and writing by creator Iko. Plus, I’ll be writing a Lost Bay adventure called Heterogony of Ends (cover art above) about the appearance of strange seed pod children emerging in the closets of a suburban paradise.
The Lost Bay podcast helped me join this strange ttrpg space. I was so pleased to join Iko on another episode. Iko and I chat about our creative processes, creating unique worlds, and navigating the challenges of indie publishing in the newest Lost Bay podcast. Link below!
Finally, join me in backing the Lost Bay on Kickstarter today!
What do you think about Cloud Empress’ move to hardcover? Let me know in the comments!
O hell yes. Box set like OSE? Slipcase?
I’m proud of the little custom 3D printed zine holder that I made to house all those precious Cloud Empress zines, but I’m actually even more excited to have it all in hardcover form!
